Fireworks, Liberty, 4th of JulyOn this 4th of July weekend many will celebrate. However, our problem is many do not know what they will be celebrating. Watch this quick video by InfoWars. When we celebrate for the sake of celebrating and we do not know why we celebrate, the celebration becomes the focus and not the historical event we are to remember.

This weekend, Liberty is why we celebrate. Freedom from a tyrannical English monarch, King George. But Liberty means more. It means the Founders set up a government that would be limited in scope and power so that we, many generations later, could continue to enjoy freedom from a powerful and oppressive government. However, Liberty began to lose its meaning in the late 20th century, and now many people have become fools, like those see on the InfoWars video.

In the 1960's progressive activists began to bend and re-shape the meaning of Liberty. These subversive few redefined Liberty from meaning “freedom from tyranny” to “freedom from morality and natural consequence”. Want to get drunk, take something from someone else, get high and have sex with whomever you want? You are free to do so, and do as much of it as you want. In their view, freedom from moral constraint is what Liberty was all about. The “oppression” in their view was morality, not government. Government in their view is good. Moral constraints bad. Unfortunately over time this new meaning took shape and ahold of the culture. The problem is that Liberty was never meant to stand alone. There is a co-principle, the other side of the coin, that must always go hand and hand with Liberty — Personal Responsibility.

Without personal responsibility, liberty become a menace to society. If you drink, smoke, steal and have as much illicit sex as you want (because you are free) then you, not society, should not bear the burden from the natural consequences of such actions. Yes you have the freedom to go outside the moral boundaries, but then you must also bear the natural consequences of such actions. However, how many trillions of dollars has our government spent (that means you and me), because of those “disabled” due to their alcoholic or drug-dependent state or because people require food and housing assistance because they now have three children and no way to support them?

When we get the definitions wrong our society reaps the natural consequences from such folly. Liberty never meant being absent of personal responsibility. Liberty never meant freedom from moral constraint and the consequences that follow such foolishness. Instead our duty is to take care of ourselves and to abide by the morality the founders lived by. By no means were the Founders perfect, but they did live by Judeo-Christian values. When they failed, they took personal responsibility, and did not thrust such burdens upon their neighbors. When governments remove the natural consequences of immoral actions in order to “help and care for” society, the social problems are never solved and only greater and greater dependence on their services is created.

This is why changing the definition of marriage from “one man and one woman” to any two people (and soon more) leads to a world of chaos. The lie is that two women or two men are equal to the union that one man and one woman creates. This is obviously not true, but now we have legalized this idea. One of the consequences will be those walking on that sunny California pier will gobble up and perpetuate this falsehood.

Enjoy your 4th of July celebration. Enjoy your family and friends. However, take a moment to be thankful for those a few brave men and women, who over 200 years ago risked everything so we could have such a day to celebrate. And in their memory let us make it our duty and responsibility to fight for Liberty — freedom from a powerful and oppressive government. It may cost us our time, our talent and our treasure, but is that not worth the reward?
