Smoky Klamath County

Welcome to beautiful and smoky Klamath County. What?!? Smoky? Yes, smoky. With several forest fires in full swing, the Klamath Basin looks like San Francisco with a bank of fog that will never leave.

But fear not. The EPA has one air quality monitor in Klamath Falls that will record the poor air quality and issue fines for Klamath County not meeting the EPA’s air quality standards. What’s that? The EPA does not measure air quality during the summer months? What?!? The EPA only measures air quality during winter months when people heat their homes with affordable firewood? Hmmmm. Seems like another government policy that sounds good, “prevent poor air quality” but really has a hidden agenda — eliminate the use of fire places and un-sanctioned wood stoves.

If the Klamath County Commissioners wanted to make a point at how ineffective the EPA is at making air quality “safe”, they should quickly pass the “Clean Air Ordinance of Klamath County.”  Next they should fine the U.S. Forest Service and the BLM for causing hellish air quality with their negligent forest and land management policies. Finally they should fine the EPA for their inability to keep air quality “safe” during the summer months.

The chance of any Federal agency paying the county fines for their ineptness is low, but an important point would be made, exposing the EPA’s hypocrisy and other agencies inability to effectively manage surrounding timberlands. Moreover, the next time any EPA bureaucrat wants to fine Klamath County due to “poor air quality” (because of wood stoves), we would just point out the fact that if wood stoves can generate a fine because they burn wood, then so should forest fires (which are equivalent to 10 million unfiltered wood stoves burning at once). Local county government will be more than happy to pay fines due to poor air quality caused by burning of firewood to keep citizens warm, but the Federal Government must pay their fines first.

We conservatives are for clean air. That is why many of us live here. However, we will not put up with the EPA telling us that wood stoves are detrimental to our health. If the EPA really cared, like they pretend, they would fine the Forest Service and BLM for the life-threatening air quality we are breathing right now.

Alas, I won’t hold my breath...

Thank you for a well written article and it's right on target. Our little air quality trailer in Klamath County is a joke. Because of frightful forest management we get this huge burns and the air quality is truly bad. This war on the homeowners that heat their house with wood in the winter has to stop. Thank you again for writting what I have said to others and have been thinking. Regards, Lisa #

I concur with Lisa. The way it looks to me is that there has been an ongoing out and out war wherein nature was pitted against humanity and humanity lost. Now even the innocuous of any natural sort have gained superior rights; superior even to the citizens of these United States. As the population of We the Lesser Empowered Human Species increases (much to the chagrin of the enemies of humanity) so does our demand for food, fiber, minerals and energy. Providing for those requirements and wants can be really good for humans since the economy does literally spring from the ground. It even abundantly produces those “living wage jobs” which the Leftists chat so passionately about. All the while though the Leftist Green Minions of Darkness work tirelessly to make sure that the needs, demands and security considerations of human society are not met. It is all ruthlessly done in the name of protecting the planet; from humans of course. False accusation backed up by politically prostituted science and propaganda focused journalism continues to be their main weapon because it works – much like it did in Nazi Germany. Add to that a constant and destabilizing flow of counterfederated money and we are becoming easy picking for our enemies who will truly appreciate the conservation of our natural resources for their unrestrained use. The H&N always has an article about how many people die from bad air in the winter. I haven't seen too much about it in the summer. Maybe we can get a liberal to volunteer to further their cause. #

That would be fitting, though as you know many of the concerned “they” are totally into sacrifice, just not their own. The irony is that as “they” continue to tighten the noose on our means of survival their necks are right in there with the rest of us. That just sort of comes along with a redefined and redefining society which is gloriously committing Green, Moral and Politically Correct suicide. A statement as such will not make any sense at all to the “they” because of their altered thought process. These are largely the sort of people who will eat bacteria and bug infested pond scum and consider it to be a healthy treat. And the ones who deplore tobacco yet are 100% on board with smoking dope. Neither are they upset with the genocide and parting out of the innocent unborn while at the same time passionately seek to prevent the capital punishment of the heinously guilty, and on and on. I say “they” as I was once challenged by a liberal educator who asked me just who the “they” were that I was so generally and wildly referring to. My answer was simple;” Those of the current time who either by naivety or malice think and would gladly act like the murderous progressive monsters of the past, and consider it all to be a great leap forward.” I do wonder though how the air quality is in Snortland, Oregon with all of that Mary Jane in the air? The reason for the fires is geoengineering. The reason for our whitening skies is geoengineering. The reason for the amplified UV ratings that is burning bark from trees is geoengineering. Without mention of geoengineering, this article has zero useful substance. #

I happen to be one of those who only has wood heat. In the past I have been damn cold on the so called "Red Days" The smoke in the basin lately makes me want to puke at the thought of playing "Red Day, Yellow Day, Green Day. What a bunch of bull. If the govt can't man enough to get the fires out then leave me the heck alone and let me heat my house in the winter. Just what validity does the EPA have to use only one testing station to control all of our wood burning. Another liberal government entity that needs to be GONE!. #

The EPA is totally out of control. the last time the government was slow getting a budget, the EPA laid of 90% of their employees. That would be a good start. If you want to get around them with your wood stove, get a squirrel cage fan from Grainger and mount it about two thirds of the way up the chimney off to the side, vented into the pipe at an upward angle. The fresh incoming air will dilute the smoke enough to make it invisible. Do it this summer to make sure you get it right. The only variable is the size of the motor and the intake angle. #
